July Update...

·
·        2015 Aerification: Successful. 4 direction Verticut and 2 direction Aerification. We are increasing our fertilizer regimen to aid in recovery, however, it will still take a good 20 days to get back to decent putting surfaces.
·        Driving Range Tee Rotation: Major Success for St Ives and turf quality. In my opinion best the range has been in my 6 years as Superintendent.
·        Bunker Renovation: We have secured Medalist Golf to begin construction on Nov 1, 2015. We are still finalizing which holes will be addressed in year 1 with the 50k allocated.
·        Bunker liner: The exposed bunker liner in the “original” Fazio style bunkers is down right awful. It has become too big of a job for our staff to “maintain” repairing fabric on an as needed basis. I am putting numbers together to add 3” of sand in all bunkers this winter. However, this will cost a fair amount of money that could be put towards renovating bunkers. Once my numbers are finalized we can determine to add sand or increase renovation.
·        Weak areas on greens: These areas will recover as we recover from aerification. We have also implemented new maintenance practices in these areas to aid in protecting ourselves from similar conditions next spring. Contrary to popular belief, Ultradwarf Bermuda grass can have issues just like bentgrass. We still have some shade issues on a few of our greens and we are scheduling to have more trees removed before fall. Traffic also is damaging to the greens during the winter months and we will implement strategies to reduce the amount of wear on our edges.
·        Tight Fairways: We have received a lot of comments about mowing the fairways too “low”. The HOC is actually (.475) which is .025” below ½”.

·        Cartpath Repairs: Capital has been budgeted for path repair, I am coordinating with our contractor on a late July – Mid August start date.

2015 Aerification

The Agronomy Team successfully completed the 2015 Green's Aerification on Wednesday afternoon. What a process! The team was able to impact double the surface area compared to last year. This past spring we shipped greens profile samples to an independent lab in Kansas to have them run a handful tests. These tests are critical in understanding how our greens perform and how we attack cultivation for the season.  These tests showed a slight increase in OM (organic matter) from 2014, so it was time to get aggressive with the cultivation. A solid rule of thumb is to impact 15% of the Surface Area each year and since St Ives decided to interrupt play once per year the Agronomy Staff gets one chance to get that nasty ole thatch out of the greens. The program we implements showed that we impacted close to 19% of the Surface Area (overachievers). This new process was time consuming as it required 3 full days to complete; we began by edging the greens then we followed up by brushing the turf canopy to stand up the plant. Once the surface was dry we started a 4 direction verticut. The team then blew off all the debris that was produced and followed up with heavy topdressing. The sand would sit on the surface until dry then we aerified with 1/2" tines on 1.3"x 2.5" spacing. The cores would then sit on top of the green to bake and dry in the sun. Once dry, a steel drag mat was drug over the surface to remove the greens mix sand from the thatch. The thatch was then blown off the green and the sand brushed into the open holes. At that point we came back and aerified with the same tine setup and repeated the process.

Recovery: Please understand that it will take a few weeks to have the greens back to the where we left off. We have increased our fertilization and with the forecasted temperatures we should have ideal bermuda grass growing weather. I expect to see turf improvement in 7-10 days and putting surfaces starting to smooth out around day 18. We will continue to topdress and fertilize to aid in smoothness and recovery. Enjoy your round!
