Agronomy Update

Finally! It seems all the grass “popped” in late March but the cloudy, wet and cool April provided no days for Bermuda grass to grow. However, last week that all changed. The conditions were sunny and hot which allowed the fairways, tees and greens to explode with growth (one of the reason we fought green speeds this past weekend). The overall conditions of fairways and tees are as expected this time of year, there will be a few areas that will need to be sodded due to the winter injury but overall right on track for early May. An old school Superintendent once told me, “The grass will green up in April but we can’t grow it until mid May”, truer words have never been spoken.

I am sure most of you have noticed a few of our troubled areas on the greens (#12, #13, #15, etc). These areas did not come out of dormancy healthy and are requiring some TLC. These areas are on an aggressive fertilization, topdressing and aerification program to encourage new growth but I still expect we will have to plug a few areas.  Patience is paramount, as we have only had one decent week of actual growing weather. The next 14-21 days will tell us a lot about these areas and what changes will need to be implemented next fall, winter and spring.
